Tangalle is famous for its stunning beaches, considered some of the best in Sri Lanka for sunbathing. The town’s main bay hosts a fishing port, while the rest of the coastline is dotted with smaller coves fringed by coconut palms. It is one of the most beautiful resort spots on Sri Lanka’s coast. Tangalle is also renowned for its cuisine, with local chefs preparing top-quality dishes from freshly caught seafood.
Year after year, Tangalle is becoming increasingly popular for diving and snorkeling.
The water’s amazing clarity allows snorkeling right near the shore, close to the hotels. The resort offers hotels of all categories. Excursions are organized to Galle Fort, Udawalawe and Yala National Parks, Sinharaja Forest, and the magnificent Milkirigala Rock Temple — a complex of natural caves featuring numerous wall paintings and Buddha statues.
Several beaches are worth visiting in Tangalle: Medaketiya and Medilla to the north, Goyambokka and Pallikaduwa to the west. The most attractive is Medilla Beach, with soft sand and shells of all colors and sizes. The water there contains coral and large rocks, so caution is advised. The safest for swimming is the three-kilometer-long Medaketiya Beach, where most budget hotels and apartments are located.
