The town of Induruwa is located on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, 70 km from Colombo and 5 km south of Bentota. The resort area offers a quiet and peaceful environment surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and endless deserted beaches—ideal for a relaxing holiday in a tropical paradise.
Although Induruwa sets a calm mood for rest, curious tourists can enjoy organized excursions that add variety to their stay. Nearby are two turtle conservation centers (one in Bentota and another in Kosgoda village). Staff at these centers buy turtle eggs from local farmers and wait for the hatchlings to emerge before releasing them into the ocean, usually at night.
For those seeking exotic experiences, river boat trips are available along the Madu Ganga, Kalu Ganga, and Bentota rivers. These river safaris usually last 2–3 hours, though longer tours are sometimes organized. The Madu Ganga trip starts from Balapitiya village and takes place on boats along the riverbanks covered with stunning mangrove forests. The trees grow almost in the water, creating thick shade and a fairy-tale atmosphere. During the tour, you may spot exotic birds, crocodiles, monitor lizards, small monkeys, and other wildlife. The bird species in the Induruwa area are diverse, including herons, ash owls, kingfishers, and many more. There is also a small island in the river where a Buddhist temple captivates tourists.
Along the riverbanks, local residents make a living weaving mats from coconut palm fibers. They prepare the fibers to create elastic ropes, which they weave into intricate patterns.
Besides river safaris, ocean fishing trips are available. To arrange this, contact local fishermen or your hotel guide. These excursions usually start early in the morning, before dawn, with boats heading 40–50 km offshore. If lucky, you can catch fish yourself and even have it cooked right on the boat—if equipped with a small kitchen—or grilled later at a nearby restaurant onshore.
