Hikkaduwa, located about 70 km south of Colombo, is a popular resort and was the first in Sri Lanka to welcome international tourists. It boasts the most developed infrastructure on the island, offering all the amenities for a premium-class vacation. Unfortunately, the famous "coral gardens" of Hikkaduwa have almost disappeared in recent years due to warm currents.
A must-visit spot is the "wholesale fish market", or "fish market", located on the shore of the artificial harbor. The trading usually starts at five in the morning, and by nine, the best catch is bought by restaurants.
You can also take a stroll to the nearby village of Dodanduwa, located close to the town center. It features a small fishing harbor inhabited by tuna and barracuda fishermen. Visitors can rent a catamaran for a two- to three-hour fishing trip early in the morning or in the evening.
In the evenings, tired but happy tourists enjoy exotic cocktails at the lively beach bar Mambos before heading to the Vibrations nightclub, where the fun never stops. If you want a break from the sea adventures, you can visit the city’s Buddhist temple or relax by the lake favored by local birds.
