Ahungalla is a small town located 78 km south of Colombo. It is known for its beautiful coastal and tropical landscapes. The excellent infrastructure of Ahungalla’s hotels attracts tourists who primarily seek peace, natural beauty, and tranquility. The town even has its own private mini-zoo.
Ahungalla has only recently begun to develop as a tourist destination, which is why there are not many hotels here yet—but the ones that do exist are modern and new. The town is ideal for a calm and laid-back vacation.
Near the town, you can visit a turtle hatchery, where guests can observe turtles being raised in their natural environment. Another local attraction is the Ambahapitiya Velithara Buddhist Temple, built during the time of Dutch rule on the island.
One more popular nearby site is the Ariyapala Mask Museum, located close to the coast. This area was once known for the production of religious masks, and today visitors can still witness traditional shamanic dances.
