Holidays in Riviera Maya

Located along the eastern coast of the state of Quintana Roo, the Riviera Maya stretches for nearly 100 kilometers along the turquoise shores of the Caribbean Sea. This spectacular region is home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, including Puerto Morelos, Playa Maroma, Playacar, Puerto Aventuras, Xpu-Ha, Akumal, and the iconic Tulum.

The Riviera Maya boasts a modern and well-developed tourist infrastructure, featuring luxury hotel complexes, marinas, sports facilities, dolphinariums, restaurants, and ecological parks. At the heart of the region lies the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity and a sanctuary for numerous endemic species of flora and fauna.

Adding to its rich natural beauty is the deep cultural heritage of the Maya people, many of whom still preserve their ancestral traditions, religious beliefs, and social customs. The legacy of the ancient Maya civilization lives on in the many archaeological sites scattered throughout the region. Although most written records were destroyed during the 16th-century Christianization, much has been preserved through pyramids, ceremonial ball courts, temples, sculptures, and plazas, offering a glimpse into one of the most advanced civilizations of the ancient Americas.

Visitors to Riviera Maya can immerse themselves in this unique blend of culture and nature by exploring archaeological wonders, relaxing on pristine beaches, or enjoying a wide array of activities such as water sports, golf and tennis tournaments, jungle treks (on foot, horseback, or ATV), diving and snorkeling, or boat trips on yachts and catamarans.

Whether it's the mysteries of the Maya, the lush tropical forests, or the crystal-clear Caribbean waters shimmering under moonlight, the Riviera Maya offers a truly unforgettable experience. Located just 20 minutes to an hour from Cancún International Airport, the region combines accessibility with unspoiled beauty—just a few of the many reasons it stands among the top resorts in the entire Caribbean.

Tourist Areas of the Riviera Maya

The Riviera Maya is home to a diverse range of beach destinations, each offering its own charm, natural beauty, and activities. From lively resort towns to quiet, unspoiled coves, there’s something for every type of traveler.

Puerto Aventuras

Located in the heart of the Riviera Maya, Puerto Aventuras is a serene beach destination popular with sailing enthusiasts, divers, and those seeking a more relaxed atmosphere. A vibrant coral reef lies just 100 meters from the shore, making it ideal for snorkeling and underwater exploration. The main beach, Fatima Bay, stretches for nearly 2.5 kilometers and remains less crowded than nearby Playa del Carmen.

Playa del Carmen

A lively and cosmopolitan beach area, Playa del Carmen features a long coastline lined with hotels, restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues. The beaches run parallel to the main tourist zone, offering easy access to both the beachfront and the bustling 5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida). This is one of the most popular areas in the Riviera Maya, perfect for those who enjoy an active and social vacation.

Xpu-Ha

Approximately 90 kilometers south of Cancún, Xpu-Ha is a stunning natural beach known for its tranquil setting, charming lagoon, and a cenote (a natural freshwater sinkhole) nearby. It’s ideal for travelers seeking a peaceful, scenic escape with opportunities for swimming and relaxing in unspoiled nature.

Kantenah

Just 34 kilometers from Playa del Carmen, Kantenah offers a quiet stretch of coastline with excellent snorkeling opportunities, thanks to the presence of vibrant coral formations close to shore. This is a great spot for both beginner and experienced snorkelers.

Akumal

Akumal, meaning “Place of Turtles” in the Mayan language, is a small and picturesque beach village. It’s renowned for its fine white sand, crystal-clear water, and abundant marine life, including sea turtles that can often be seen close to the shore. The calm waters make it especially suitable for families with children, and it’s a favorite among divers, snorkelers, and fishermen alike.

Tulum

One of the Riviera Maya’s most iconic destinations, Tulum combines archaeological wonders with natural beauty. The beach lies beneath ancient Mayan ruins perched on cliffs, offering a unique blend of culture and scenery. The area features dramatic limestone rocks, secluded beach spots, and eco-chic accommodations. Nearby, Xcacel Beach stands out for its pristine sands, mangroves, and lagoon, and from November to May, it serves as a nesting site for Caretta Caretta sea turtles.

Climate

The climate of the Riviera Maya is exceptionally pleasant—warm, sunny, and tropical year-round. The average annual high temperature reaches around 30°C (86°F), making it an ideal destination in any season. The Caribbean Sea maintains a comfortable average water temperature of approximately 25°C (77°F), perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and other water activities throughout the year.

Best Time to Visit

Thanks to its mild tropical climate, the Riviera Maya is a pleasant destination year-round. However, the most favorable time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, lower humidity, and ideal conditions for beach activities, sightseeing, and outdoor adventures.

The Riviera Maya is a 180-kilometer-long resort region located on the northeastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo, just 50 kilometers south of Cancún. The coastline stretches from Playa del Carmen to Tulum, with the island of Cozumel lying just offshore—an ideal spot for diving and snorkeling.
