Negombo, meaning "Honey Village", is a popular tourist resort located about 40 km from Colombo. However, Negombo is interesting not only for its beautiful beaches but also for its rich history and culture.
The main attraction for tourists is the long picturesque sandy beach located north of the city center. Numerous comfortable hotels have been built here, offering a wide range of activities both on land and water, such as windsurfing, diving, and kite surfing.
Negombo is also a favorite spot for fish and seafood lovers. Local fishermen catch incredible amounts of lobsters, crabs, and shrimp in the bay. Numerous beachside taverns prepare these seafood delicacies over open fires.
Negombo is known as a center of Catholicism on the island and is often called the "Little Rome." It’s no surprise that the city has many churches and cathedrals, with St. Mary’s Cathedral being the largest and most picturesque.
Additionally, visitors can take a real journey back in time by exploring the ruins of the Dutch fort built in 1672, the Dutch canal which once served as a secondary route to the Dutch administration, old churches and cemeteries, as well as pristine nature and a colorful fish market.
