Colombo is the capital and economic center of Sri Lanka, as well as one of the largest seaports in South Asia. The city is a mix of modern hotels and skyscrapers alongside colonial buildings, souvenir shops, street markets, and temples. It’s the largest city in the country and plays a central role in Sri Lanka’s industrial, economic, and cultural life. Colombo is also home to a major seaport on the western coast, washed by the Indian Ocean.
The number of attractions here is almost impossible to count: The Fort, the Old Lighthouse, numerous mosques, the National Museum, monasteries, art galleries, beautiful gardens, the Presidential Palace, and the Clock Tower are just a few. The population of Colombo exceeds 1.5 million people.
Sights
The city is rich in temples, mosques, and cathedrals. The most famous among them is Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara – a beautiful example of Sinhalese architecture and art. The current temple was built in the early 20th century, but its first historical mention dates back to the 3rd century BC. The frescoes inside illustrate stories from the many lives of Buddha, his visit to the temple, myths, and legends. Located 9 km from central Colombo, the temple attracts many visitors, including tourists.
