Bentota is a well-known resort on the southwest coast of the island, located 62 km south of Colombo. The town features many first-class hotels, a shopping center, a railway station, shops, cafes, and an open-air theater where masquerades and puppet shows are held. Bentota is a favorite destination for newlyweds and romantic couples.
Visitors can go on a water safari along the Bentota Ganga River to explore the unique local flora and fauna. Alternatively, you can visit the ruins of the Galapata Vihara complex, built in the 12th century, which preserves amazing wall paintings and Buddha statues.
About 3 km from Bentota is a turtle sanctuary where these adorable reptiles are bred.
Bentota is divided into two beaches: the northern headland (Paradise Beach), which separates the waves of the Indian Ocean from the calm waters of the Bentota Lagoon, and the southern beach — more lively, with a wide range of entertainment options and luxury hotels. Interestingly, despite being one of Sri Lanka's most popular resorts, Bentota’s beaches remain uncrowded and peaceful.
